“Once upon a time there was (and is) Vitória” is the first children’s book about the history of Vitória de Guimarães.
At the heart of the sporting narrative of Guimarães lies “Once upon a time there was (and is) Vitória”. This book, much more than a compilation of facts, is an emotional and visual journey through the fabric of the club and the city. Each page, carefully illustrated, transports us to iconic moments, weaving the rich history of Vitória with the memories of those who lived it.
It all begins on 22 October 1986: the boy (Daniel) who went, with his father (and grandfather, António), to see Vitória for the first time in that epic match, is the same one who, a few pages later, is shown taking his daughter, little Eugénia, to D. Afonso Henriques. Within this family context, Vitória's century-old history unfolds: foundation, stadiums, players, anthems, kits, colours and fans, in an elegant dance between times and generations.
As for its creation, the book is a testament to local passion. The result of the collaboration of two creators from Guimarães – Catarina Peixoto, with her art (editing, layout and illustration) and Paulo César Gonçalves, with the words – it was brought to life thanks to the support of local entities and the commitment of Vitória. The result? A work that does not limit itself to telling the story of football, but which celebrates the city, its inhabitants and the unbreakable bond between them and the club.
